In this sequel to the popular Beast Wars series, the Maximals, a fierce team of robotic beasts, continue to defend their homeworld from the evil Megatron. The Maximals - Optimus Primal, impetuous feline Cheetor, calculating spider Blackarachnia and wise-cracking rodent Rattrap - have finally defeated Megatron and his army, but after waking from an unconscious state, they find themselves hunted by a new breed of Transformers - the Vehicons. Forced underground, the Maximals undergo a strange alteration of their beast/robot bodies. The sole survivor of Megatron's invasion - an orphaned Transformers-bat named Nightscream - aids them in their quest as the Maximals learn the advantages of their new powers of metamorphosis, and begin their struggle to free their planet from Megatron's evil rule.
