Dr Michaela Quinn is a refined city doctor who leaves her home in sophisticated Boston for the rough hewn life of the frontier in Colorado Springs, when she answers an advert for a town doctor.
She is met with hostility, suspicion and resentment as the locals are mistrustful of a female doctor. She soon finds her genteel values are at odds with the cruder mindset of her new Western home.
