Hollywood called them The Devil’s Brigade.
The Germans they fought called them The Black Devils…
The men of the 1st Special Service Force were the world’s first special forces. Formed in America in the spring of 1942, these elite regiments were designed to fight behind enemy lines. The men were trained to overcome any obstacle, survive in any situation – and to be utterly ruthless killers with weapons or bare hands.
Devils’s Brigade charts the operational history of this battle-hardened special force from 1942 to its disbandment in 1944, from the Aleutians to the Italian Campaign, featuring rare archive film, some of which is in colour. Veterans of the force – many speaking for the very first time - provide vivid, first hand accounts of combat.
At the same time, fifteen soldiers of today – many of them veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan – volunteer to undergo the training given to 1st Special Service Force soldiers in 1942. They train to use WWII German weapons, plan ambushes and learn the art of ‘fighting dirty’ and close in knife work under the tutelage of instructor Bill Wolfe.
If they prove tough enough, if they can stay the course, they will then have to relive the Devil’s Brigade’s finest moment – a night assault on Mount Difensa in Italy. To launch the assault they will have to scale a 3,000 ft cliff – at night…
All four parts of this major documentary series are included on this DVD, which offers an unrivalled insight into the world’s first special forces as well as a moving tribute to the truly extraordinary men who fought and died with the ‘Devil’s Brigade’.
